Elijah

The namesake of the gallery is dedicated to our son, ElijahElisio Timbale Gortaire-Wheat. He lived a vibrant life of joyful interactions, musical expressions and powerful generosity towards his friends. He was loved, he was loving, he was an empathetic soul with remarkable emotional intelligence. His adoration towards all creatures prompted his innate ability to communicate with a most sensitive sonic vibration. Elijah had a great voice for righteousness, activism and believed in standing up for the rights of those whom could not speak for themselves. His style was bold, unapologetic and contagious. We giggle thinking about his hats, light up- dancing gloves, cannabis printed Vans and choices of edgy prints on his clothing. He played ‘Ave Maria’, Bartok, Beethoven along with contemporaries like‘Viva La Vida’ and ‘Call Me Maybe’ by ear on his violin-- like an angel--getting harassed by cops in the subway. He would make his fingers move with a dizzying rhythm and psychedelic finesse to put you into a tranquil trance no matter what state you’re in. He was, like all of us, unique. We regret that he took his own life on January 17, 2014 at the handsome age of 16, however, we are so grateful that we knew him. When asked, “Would your rather know (despite the circumstances), or never know?” We rejoice and holler “Yes, we are so glad we know!” We give the gift of this ghost, our son, our little angel to the community and hope it brings the love, voice, and unconditional acceptance that he gave to his own friends.
